Game Market Roundup: Top Grossing Games for Facebook, iOS and Android in October 2014


This is our third report covering the top grossing titles on 4 major gaming platforms: iPhone, iPad, Android, and Facebook. Now it’s time to find out the leaders of October.

The first thing you should know is that on Facebook we’ve got the same top 10 apps as in September, and on mobile there has been a minor change in 8-10 positions.

Top grossing genre. Strategies, or rather one well-known strategy from Supercell, are in the lead again across mobile. Facebook is still occupied with Match 3 titles (Puzzle category), which also have kept the second place in all mobile grossing charts.

October gross earnings of some strategy apps declined as compared to September: Boom Beach dropped out of top 10 grossing titles on iOS and iPad, and Castle Clash descended from the 9th position on Android. Whereas, more successful strategies moved up in the average downloads rankings and increased their MAU (Android app Game of War - Fire Age went 23 positions higher, Kixeye added over 100 K monthly users on Facebook).

Match 3 titles have obviously lost more than gained. In October, Diamond Digger Saga debuted in the top 10 grossing apps list on Android, while three other titles of Match 3 genre lost their positions on iPad and iPhone. Always-the-leader Candy Crush Saga in its turn lost around 6 million monthly active users in October (119 million vs. 125 million in September) and its DAU declined as well by around 1,200,000 players. This loss got balanced with October success of King’s Match 3 titles on Android, for five (!) of them grossed well enough to get into the top 10. Yes, Match 3 games are still very popular.        

Top grossing game. October grossing list would obviously get David Helgason disappointed: Clash of Clans and Candy Crush are still there, ruling at the top and generating huge revenues for their makers.  

Nothing more to say about this sweet couple, and we should better look at who’s No. 3 in October. The “title” goes to Game of War - Fire Age by Machine Zone. This strategy game is third best grossing game across all mobile platforms, and since September it went 10-15 positions up in the average download rankings.  

Breakthrough of the month. In October we’ve got two games that cut their way into top grossing charts on mobile - the simulation app The Simpsons™: Tapped Out by Еlectronic Аrts and the TinyCo’s Action Adventure called Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff. Both titles are based on cult animated series that have millions of fans around the world. This probably explains the grossing success of games, as over the last three months none of the Adventure genred games got ranked so high. The Family Guy game was the #1 in the Adventure category in US throughout October.   

Top publisher. The leaders haven’t changed, and Supercell ended up as the most money-making game publishers of October. Aside from their celebrity apps (CCS and Clash of Clans), both companies have at least one title with a stably high earnings on mobile platforms. It’s Farm Heroes Saga for King - the game is among top 5 grossing apps on three platforms out of four (only being No. 7 on iPad). Meanwhile, Supercell can be proud of Hay Day, which gets into top 6 best-sellers on all mobile platforms for 3 months in a row.
